Five Tier Alternative Conceptions Diagnostic Test to Identify Students’ Alternative Conceptions in Science

Abstract
The form of Five – Tier Diagnostic Test was a five – level multiple choice consisting of answer choice at the first level, level of confidence in the answer at the second level, choice of reason at the third level, confidence level for reasons at the fourth level, and drawing/conclusion for the fifth level. The five tier diagnostic test can identify students deeper conceptual understanding. It decreases the chances of exam guessing. Level 1 and Level 3 exam scoring simplified. It also assists teachers in determining if respondents offer incorrect responses due to alternate conceptions or incorrect answers due to a lack of subject matter knowledge, and what the sources of the concept or lack of knowledge are in any instance. The assessment development consists of define stages, design stages, and develop stages.
