Abstract

The purpose of this research is to determine the demographic profiles and behavior patterns of eco-tourists.  This research data was collected through in-depth interviews with Thai travel agents. The demographic findings are as follows. The vast majority of eco-tourists are between the ages of 25 and 45. The vast majority have a tier-one university degree. Most are employed in the private sector.  Most are single. With regard to their vacation rationale, most state that they enjoy self-managed holidays. They prefer to make daily decisions on activities rather than travel on a package tour with group – organized sight-seeing. They also seek to relax and escape stress. With regard to the sources of information concerning vacation destinations and activities, this group is very familiar with technology, so the internet is their most important information source both for destinations choices and for available daily activities at the destination. Despite their familiarity with technology, however, their second choice for vacation decisions remains “word of mouth.” Eco-tourists like to take recommendations from trusted friends and other eco-tourists that have previously visited the region. Important factors for eco-tourists are uploaded photos of landscapes, natural beauty and available tourism infrastructure and services.  They rely on peer group hotel reviews, restaurant reviews and overall reviews of all services required for their vacation. “Good/excellent service” remains the number one reason why travel guides return to a previously visited destination.

Suggestions: The community should study and learn the benefits of promoting ecotourism. This should be executed by a management group that understands the local landscape and is knowledgeable about tourism patterns and activities important to eco-tourists. This team should educate the other constituents within the local tourism industry on the local ecological landscape, the activities available to eco-tourists, and the benefits of ecotourism through a community learning center.
