Thailand’s Healthcare Trajectory: Economic Prosperity, Social Inequality, and the Challenges of an Aging Population

Abstract

Thailand’s healthcare trajectory over the past decade has been shaped by economic prosperity, persistent social inequality, and the challenges of an aging population. This study examines the correlation between key economic indicators, healthcare expenditures, and demographic trends from 2012 to 2021. The analysis reveals a strong positive correlation between GDP and healthcare expenditure (r = 0.848, p = 0.002), highlighting the role of economic growth in healthcare investments. Conversely, income inequality, measured by the GINI index, is negatively correlated with healthcare spending (r = -0.869, p = 0.001), indicating disparities in access despite Thailand’s Universal Health Coverage system. Findings further demonstrate that an increase in healthcare professionals, including doctors (r = 0.891, p < 0.001) and nurses (r = 0.961, p < 0.001), is positively associated with higher life expectancy. Additionally, demographic shifts such as declining birth rates (r = -0.974, p < 0.001) and a rising elderly population have significantly influenced healthcare expenditure patterns. The analysis emphasizes the impact of household expenditure on healthcare affordability, showing moderate positive correlations with healthcare spending. To address these challenges, the study recommends expanding financial assistance and healthcare subsidies for low-income populations to reduce disparities in access. It also suggests strategic investments in preventive healthcare in rural areas, to lower long-term costs and enhance health outcomes. Additionally, improving workforce distribution policies to encourage healthcare professionals to work in underserved regions and developing long-term elderly care infrastructure are essential. These policy recommendations aim to create a more inclusive and sustainable healthcare system in Thailand.
