Abstract

The objectives of this study were to find out the English pronunciation problems and to investigate factors affecting English pronunciation problems of undergraduate students, Faculty of Liberal Arts, Princess of Naradhiwas University. This study was both quantitative and qualitative research. The samples were 38 undergraduate students, Faculty of Liberal Arts, Princess of Naradhiwas University who were enrolled in 11-054-219 Introduction to Phonetics and Phonology. The research instruments were a questionnaire and semi-structured interview form.

The results showed that the overall English pronunciation problems of undergraduate students, Faculty of Liberal Arts, Princess of Naradhiwas University; the segmental level was medium ( x̄ =2.89, S.D. =0.98) and the strongest problem was consonant clusters and the suprasegmental level was high level (x̄ =3.58, S.D. =0.91) and the strongest problem was word stress. The factors affecting English pronunciation problems were the influence of native language, English pronunciation knowledge, pronunciation teaching methodology, phonetic ability, and attitude and motivation toward English pronunciation. According to the results, they serve as a guideline for teaching planning to develop English pronunciation of students and curriculum revision of the Faculty of Liberal Arts, Princess of Naradhiwas University.
