Statistical Literacy, Data Literacy, and Information Literacy: Differences and Similarities
Keywords:
Literacy, Statistics Data Information, Distinctions, CommonalitiesAbstract
In an information-driven society, statistical literacy, data literacy, and information literacy have become increasingly important and central to educational approaches. This academic paper aims to highlight both the differences and similarities between these three types of literacy. The key points include: 1) Statistical literacy focuses on understanding and critically assessing statistical conclusions by questioning the underlying processes involved in statistical problem-solving; data literacy emphasizes the creation of information or knowledge that can be applied in real-world contexts; and information literacy concentrates on synthesizing relevant information to generate new insights or solutions to specific problems. 2) The three types of literacy distinct in terms of their definitions, promotion processes, goals, tasks, concepts, and disciplinary approaches. However, they share commonalities, such as their interdisciplinary nature and the need for critical evaluation of information. Understanding the distinctions and overlaps among these literacies enables educators to organize teaching and learning more effectively and with greater precision.
