Development of a Board Game to Promote Critical Thinking Using Spatial Data from Nakhon Ratchasima Province
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study on developing a board game based on critical thinking principles using spatial data from Nakhon Ratchasima province aims to design and develop a board game that incorporates critical thinking principles from the province's spatial data, and to evaluate the impact of the developed board game on developing critical thinking skills. The study employs a Research and Development (R&D) model, divided into three stages: 1. Data collection from the spatial data of Nakhon Ratchasima province; 2. Designing the board game based on critical thinking principles, and 3. Evaluating the quality and impact of the developed board game on critical thinking skills. A sample group of 40 players was selected, consisting of 20 players with prior board game experience and 20 players without.
This study developed a board game to promote critical thinking by integrating spatial information of Nakhon Ratchasima province. The game, titled "Ko Rush: Running for Dreams in Ya Mo City," was rated highly by the target group. When considering suitability across five aspects, all aspects received high ratings. The ranking from highest to lowest average score was: suitability of the game layout, followed by the storyline, suitability of elements, suitability of appearance and feel, and suitability of gameplay mechanics. Furthermore, the overall evaluation of critical thinking skills after playing the board game showed a high level of effectiveness. When considering each core skill area, all aspects received high ratings, with reflective judgment having the highest average score, followed by summarization, analysis, and evaluation. In conclusion, board games can enhance critical thinking abilities, and their gameplay stimulates greater student engagement. However, further research should be conducted to evaluate the integration of board games with other instructional methods or field trips within Nakhon Ratchasima province, thereby promoting sustainable learning among students.
