Abstract

In the digital era, people are confronted with an overwhelming flow of information and the rush of daily life. Digital fatigue and the decline of physical interaction have become important social issues, leading to an increasing need for outdoor recreation spaces that allow individuals to connect with nature and restore balance in their lives. This article aims to 1) analyze the characteristics and impacts of the digital society on leisure behavior, well-being, and the desire to escape into nature; 2) classify the forms and characteristics of outdoor recreation activities that correspond to the context of the digital society; 3) synthesize theoretical frameworks that explain the healing power of nature and the role of outdoor recreation in restoring life balance and promoting holistic well-being; and 4) propose systemic and policy-oriented approaches to advance outdoor recreation as a key mechanism for sustainably addressing the challenges of the digital era. The study employed interpretive content synthesis based on contemporary academic documents and conceptual frameworks in recreation. The findings indicate that outdoor recreation serves as a strategic force that responds to restorative needs in physical, mental, social, and environmental dimensions. The authors also propose the Recreation–Technology Restoration Model (RTRM) to explain the integration of nature and technology as parallel forces that support human well-being and learning. Systemic approaches that emphasize equitable access, policy integration with communities, and the development of evidence-based monitoring systems will help create a safe, equitable, and sustainable outdoor recreation ecosystem, which serves as a crucial foundation for guiding Thai society toward a balanced and stable transition into the digital era.
