Abstract

Many Hollywood science fiction films were screened in Thailand, providing Thai audiences with stories rich in imagination, science, and cutting-edge technology, as well as visually and aurally thrilling creations. The author wonders if there are any Thai science fiction films in production. Moreover, what would a Thai science fiction film look like if it were made today? The purpose of this article is not to pass judgment on the quality of Thai science fiction films, but rather to provide a comprehensive overview of the genre from 1969, when Thai films were first produced under a standardized system and began to receive government support, to 2022, with special attention paid to the unique qualities of Thai science fiction films. Examining Thai science fiction films provides yet another angle from which to observe the Thai people's imaginative capacity and their attitudes toward science and technology. Because Thai films do not develop in isolation but rather grow together with movies from other countries, the author of this article decided to use the Christian era (A.D.) instead of the Buddhist era (B.E.) to facilitate the study and comparison of Thai science fiction films with films from other countries.
