A Critical Discourse Analysis of Thaksin Shinawatra’s Communication on the 2025 Thai – Cambodia Border Conflict

This article aims to study on Thaksin Shinawatra’s communication process in relation to the 2025 Thai – Cambodia border conflict, a geopolitical event with national security impact and civilians on the border. It applies the framework of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) based on Norman Fairclough’s three – dimensional model of text, discursive practice, and sociocultural practice. The data was conducted through interviews, public discussions, and online media platforms, the discourse was analyzed in two phases: before and after the armies’ confrontation on 24 July 2025 to compare the shifting of discourse and different societies’ context.
The findings reveal that Thaksin’s discourse shifted in respond to the changes relating to political power and social contexts with different roles between “former prime minister” and “father of the current prime minister”. Before the armies’ confrontation, Thaksin’s discourse emphasized political legitimacy. After the incident of confrontation, his communication shifted to support the military, affirming national security using them to reinforce the political legitimacy
