Over the course of discussion of an ad-hoc committee of the International Olympic Committee (IOC)'s medical regulatory body — known as the IOC Medical Commission — new elements have been introduced into the international discussion of issues raised in dimensions of the discussion of sex reassignment in sports. These elements allow for specific legal challenges to be tackled such as athletes ‘surgical anatomical changes, legal recognition of athletes’ assigned sex, and hormonal therapy appropriate for the athletes’ assigned sex. This article explores the challenges of the participation of transgender athletes in competitive sports and, more broadly, of sex segregation in competitive sport in light of the norm in competitive sports under the Statement of the Stockholm consensus on sex reassignment in sports 2003 (Stockholm Consensus 2003). The paper also explains that there are a few arguments for sports stakeholders and participants to apply appropriate international human rights norm and standards of sex segregation in competitive sports.
