Abstract

This study aims to analyze and compare the spatial metaphors of the word “心 [xīn]” in Chinese and “ใจ [jai]” in Thai within the framework of Conceptual Metaphor Theory proposed by Lakoff and Johnson. The research draws on Chinese and Thai language corpora, using the keywords “心 [xīn]” and “ใจ [jai]” to collect data samples. The analysis is based on a three-dimensional spatial metaphor model: line (one-dimensional), surface (two-dimensional), and container (three-dimensional). The findings reveal that both languages share common characteristics in employing spatial metaphors to conceptualize the notion of “mind/heart.” However, some differences are also observed—particularly the one-dimensional metaphor, which appears exclusively in Chinese. While the two- and three-dimensional metaphors tend to exhibit similar spatial conceptualizations in both languages, variations in lexical choices and semantic interpretations remain evident. These findings reflect a shared cognitive mechanism through which humans structure abstract understanding via spatial metaphors, while also highlighting the influence of sociocultural contexts in shaping language-specific conceptualizations. This study contributes to the fields of cognitive linguistics, Chinese and Thai language education, and translation between the two languages.
