Teachers’ Perceptions of the impact of the Double Reduction Policy on the Teaching and Learning Process: A case of a School in Kunming

บทคัดย่อ

This study investigated teachers’ perceptions of the impact of China’s “Double Reduction” Policy on instructional practices and professional development at Kunming Foreign Language School. This study employed a mixed-methods approach with an explanatory sequential design. The quantitative phase comprised a questionnaire administered to 131 teachers, selected by using the Yamane sampling formula, with data analysed in SPSS (Cronbach’s α = 0.91). The qualitative phase comprised semi-structured interviews with 8 teachers selected by purposive sampling. Interview transcripts were analysed thematically using Litchman’s “3Cs” (Codes, Categories, Concepts) framework. The findings indicate that the policy has positively influenced teaching practices by shifting focus towards homework quality, classroom efficiency, and pedagogical innovation.(e.g., Item 8, = 3.63, SD = 1.3). However, it has also introduced significant challenges. Two core concepts were identified: a disjunction between policy ideals and institutional realities, particularly regarding assessment reform, and an imbalance between heightened professional demands on teachers and the support actually provided. The study concludes that while the policy has initiated meaningful changes, its full effectiveness depends on complementary reforms in evaluation systems, enhanced teacher training, fair compensation for extended duties, and improved policy communication.
