Abstract

This academic article aimed to analyze meditation practice in managing suffering through a comparative conceptual framework between Western psychology approaches, particularly the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program, and the principles of Ānāpānasati meditation in Buddhism. This study was an analytical literature review synthesizing ideas from research in psychology, mental health, and Buddhism to explain the differences in goals, mechanisms, and meanings of meditation practice within each framework. The analysis revealed that meditation practices in Western psychology and Ānāpānasati meditation in Buddhism had different aims in managing suffering. Western psychology focused on psychological therapy, using MBSR techniques to adjust perception and regulate emotions to alleviate stress and enhance life performance by developing mental skills such as self-observation and emotional control. In contrast, Ānāpānasati meditation in Buddhism emphasized the development of wisdom to overcome suffering by integrating mindfulness, concentration, and insight (Ānāpānasati) to understand the causes of suffering and loosen attachment to the self. The goal was to achieve structural changes in mental experiences. This conceptual framework systematically explained the role and scope of meditation practice in a cross-disciplinary context and was valuable for critically applying meditation in contemporary mental health therapy.
