Abstract

This academic article aims to analyze the principle of Bhojane mattaññuta as an ethical and integrated Buddhist framework for appropriate food consumption within the context of contemporary well-being. This study is a documentary analysis, drawing upon the Pali Canon (Tipitaka), Commentaries, and contemporary academic works on Buddhism, health, and nutrition to synthesize the meaning and practical roles of this principle.
The findings indicate that Bhojanemattaññuta is not merely limited to disciplinary practice or portion control. Rather, it reflects a holistic conceptual framework that systematically interconnects body, mind, and wisdom. This principle explains consumption in relation to moderation, mindfulness, and responsibility toward both individual and social well-being. This article contributes new knowledge by elevating Bhojanemattaññuta from a religious practice to an integrated Buddhist analytical framework for food consumption in a contemporary society influenced by consumerism, ultra-processed foods, and social stimuli. When integrated with health science knowledge, this principle can support the creation of sustainable well-being, offering significant value to applied Buddhist studies and health policy development.
