Contemporary Meditation: The Application of Kammaṭṭhāna Practice in the Context of Modern Society
Main Article Content
Abstract
The study of contemporary meditation practices in daily life aims to analyze and summarize the application of Samatha and Vipassanā meditation for the development of mind, wisdom, morality, and balanced living. The development of the mind focuses on cultivating calmness, stability, and mindfulness, enabling individuals to cope effectively with stress, pressure, disturbances, and changes in daily life, such as fast-paced work, family conflicts, or challenges in schools and society. Samatha practices, such as ānāpānasati (mindfulness of breathing) and repeating the phrase “Buddho”, help stabilize the mind, reduce distraction, and enhance concentration in decision-making. The development of wisdom emphasizes insight into the reality of phenomena according to the Three Characteristics: Aniccā, Dukkhā, and Anattā, which reduces attachment and defilements, while promoting correct attitudes and behaviors. The application of meditation in contemporary society and daily life includes short mindfulness sessions at workplaces or schools, observing emotions, thoughts, and sensations with awareness, organizing group mindfulness activities, and integrating mindfulness into work and daily routines. Promoting morality and balanced living through meditation enables individuals to cultivate inner virtues such as loving-kindness, compassion, patience, and honesty, reducing social misconduct and enhancing interpersonal relationships within families, communities, and society. The outcomes of applying contemporary meditation practices include individuals developing mental stability, mindfulness, and concentration in decision-making, living a balanced life, cultivating virtues, and being able to coexist with others in modern society peacefully and sustainably. Contemporary meditation thus serves not only as a personal spiritual practice but also as a practical tool for enhancing psychological well-being, moral development, and social harmony in the context of modern life.
