Learning Management Guidelines for Social Studies to Enhance Active Citizen in A Democratic Society

An active citizen is a fundamental concept in democratic societies, referring to citizens who are responsible for their community and actively participate in its development by adhering to laws, customs, traditions, and culture. An active citizen not only recognizes societal issues but is also committed to collaborative efforts to address these challenges seriously, with the goal of strengthening true democracy. The essential characteristics of active citizens include five dimensions: knowledge, skills, attitudes, values, and active engagement. Promoting active citizens should focus on developing knowledge and skills related to governance, political participation, and democratic citizenship. Learning environments that foster active citizens in democratic societies should emphasize students’ involvement in decision-making and practical engagement, without bias towards any political ideology. Such planned and hands-on learning experiences allow students to understand their roles as responsible citizens, motivating them to actively participate in political processes. By encouraging diverse learning methods and active involvement, students can better grasp their responsibilities and roles as citizens. This approach empowers them to contribute to building a sustainable democratic society, promoting equality and genuine democracy for the future.
